What is PCI?
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS, commonly referred to as PCI) is
a set of required security practices designed to protect your business from unauthorized access (hacking) that leads to:
- Data Breach
- Theft of Cardholder Data
- Fraud
- Financial Loss to the Merchant
Why is it so complicated?
The Data Security Standard and the associated compliance is complicated for two reasons - 1. Computers in general are complicated and hackers are very smart and getting smarter by the day. 2. You have to stay one step ahead of them at all times.
Vendor Safe has reduced the complexity of compliance in two ways - first, by making it easier to understand so you can make prudent business decisions about how to comply and second, offering monthly fee based solutions that are easily implemented and affordable. There are three critical areas of concern : Network Security, Data Access, Policies and Procedures. This chart gives you an idea of the areas affected by PCI and the relative effort required to comply:
Who should I thank for PCI?
You can thank the PCI Security Standards Council, an organization founded by American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard Worldwide, and Visa Inc.
What are the dangers of noncompliance?
In addition to fines, penalties, and once loyal, now mad customers that consider themselves to be victims of identity theft thanks to you - you must deal with the aftermath, an expensive and time consuming mandatory security audit.
